He was selected to the Major League All-Star Game twelve times, and was one of the pivotal players on the 1990 Reds' World Series championship team. Larkin is considered one of the top players of his era, winning nine Silver Slugger awards, three Gold Glove awards, and the 1995 National League Most Valuable Player Award. He served as a coach for the American team in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and managed the Brazilian national team for the same event in 2013. Larkin retired after the 2004 season and worked in a front-office position for the Washington Nationals for several years until he joined ESPN as a baseball analyst. Larkin struggled with a string of injuries between 19, limiting his playing time in several seasons. He quickly won the starting shortstop role for the Reds and enjoyed a long run of strong seasons with the team. He briefly played in the minor leagues before making his MLB debut in 1986. He played shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1986 to 2004. And the ripples of the injuries near the top could trickle down into the farm system and the roster decisions to fill out the roles.Barry Louis Larkin (born April 28, 1964) is an American former professional baseball player. But if there’s an injury, the options for Cincinnati are going to be quite limited early in the season. They can probably get by without a back up option on the 26-man roster for a short period of time – with the hopes that Farmer can play just about every day and remain healthy. With Kyle Farmer at shortstop for the Reds, the team isn’t desperate for a starter. That was a little different given that there wasn’t a minor league season taking place and all of his time on the field was at the alternate site, but the team did make the decision that the needs of the big league club prevailed a little bit over the short-term development for Barrero. We saw that in 2020 when the club needed a shortstop and opted to call up Jose Barrero despite having never played above High-A at the time. There’s always a delicate balance between the needs of the big league team and the development of a player. Does the lack of other options push him to Triple-A to begin the year? Do the Reds opt to push Miguel Hernandez to Triple-A to start things off and adjust down the road if needed? The team did sign JT Riddle to a minor league deal last week, so perhaps that is the option they go with, though the now 30-year-old hit just. With Querecuto seemingly out of action right now, and with Rodriguez gone, what happens in Triple-A? Matt McLain seemed to be destined for Double-A. While the lack of a backup at the big league level could be a problem, how things shake out in the upper minor leagues at the shortstop spot is a bit of a question, too. But the organization released Alfredo Rodriguez on March 12th and sent Juniel Querecuto to minor league camp on Sunday – though he’s reportedly injured, making it unlikely he was an option at the present. ![]() When spring training began there were two other names that have Triple-A experience who could at least served as emergency backups if needed. It would be a very big ask of either of them to step into the big leagues at this point. But McLain has played 31 games in his professional career and never above High-A. A few guys have played a tiny amount of shortstop that are there – Donovan Solano and Alejo Lopez have played there, but are more second/third basemen from a defensive standpoint.Ĭincinnati extended invites to big league camp from their minor league camp to Matt McLain and Miguel Hernandez. The 40-man roster doesn’t have another true shortstop on it who is healthy. With Kyle Farmer now having the shortstop position at the big league level without much competition, who would back him up with Barrero out is a big question. On it’s own, that puts the Reds in a tough situation. He’s scheduled to get a second opinion on it today. On Sunday we learned that Barrero was likely to miss the next six weeks with a hamate injury in his left wrist. Or there would be if everyone were healthy. Starting with Jose Barrero and going all the way down to Ricardo Cabrera in the DSL, there’s a legitimate top 25-caliber prospect at the position at each level. Shortstop may be the deepest position in the entire Cincinnati Reds farm system.
